COP is a abbreviation of Coefficient of Performance of a chiller.
COP in HVAC industry is as important as
Percentage in exams,
Scores in sports,
Wealth of a person. etc
COP of chiller gives us an idea about how efficient the chiller is ? or what is the current efficiency status of a chiller?
To calculate COP of chiller, first you need to understand the concept here.
Usually, to calculate the number / percentage.
Percentage = (What we get / what we spend)
Similarly,
COP formula
COP of chiller = (How much of Refrigeration tons it produces / How much energy/ electricity we spent)
You may get confused about Refrigeration ton to kw conversion. I have explained in Refrigeration ton to kw, how 1 RT = 3.51kw? You may check the post.
For example,
If a chiller produces 2500kw of refrigeration and consumes 700kw electricity then we will say COP of the chiller is (2500/700) is 3.57.
Now, you will ask. How much is too much?
Well, anything higher than 5 to 7 is the Best~
ASHRAE recommends to choose a chiller efficient as 0.85kw/ tons.
Why the coefficient of performance is important?
The coefficient of performance helps us access whether the chiller use electricity efficiently or not ?
The coefficient of performance (COP) is a useful measure of an industrial process chiller’s efficiency that can help preserve resources, improve operation, and save operating costs.
- Consumes little resources/ fossil fuels (will as well)
- Reduced operating cost
- Efficient HVAC system promotes operational excellence and further sustainability.
In the next post we shall discuss about, ways to improve chiller COP and factors affecting chiller performance. As it is whole new topic of discussion.

Because I believe if you can’t explain any topic in 2 mins, then that just a waste.
